Is Your Website 508 Compliant?

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

I found this on Tech Dirt today and it helps to emphasize why we believe in building 508 compliant websites.

Google today released Accessible Search, a Google Labs product aiming to rank higher pages which are optimized for blind users. Google asks you to adhere to the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines if you want to make sure your pages are accessible (and thus, rank better on Google Accessible Search). I wrote a small tool to compare results of default and accessible results.”

How Important is the Download Speed of a Website?

Monday, April 24th, 2006

This is a very good question that one of our readers asked us to address. Website speed is an important factor to not only SEO, but to increasing conversions.

When SE spiders come to your site to index it’s content they typically have a very limited amount of time to index your website. The faster your server response time the more information the spiders will get. One way around this for Google is to use the Google Sitemaps utility. Google Sitemaps is an XML file that you place on your server that tells Google where all of you pages can be found and how often they are updated. I suspect the other major SE’s are working on something similar, but we will have to wait.

Buyer conversion rates can also be affected dramatically by the speed of your server. The longer your website takes to process pages the longer your clients have to change their minds about making a purchase with you.

How do I find out what my speed is?
An easy way to see how well your server ranks in comparison to all other servers is through the Alexa Toolbar. Using the toolbar anyone can click on the more info button to read some interesting statistics on their website.

Comit Hosting is an affordable way to increase your websites visibility. Our servers are in the top 10% in terms of server speed and are SEO Certified!

Have you read the Google Blog?

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Keeping up with the ever changing Search Engines is one of the key challenges that every SEO professional must endure. In the quest to have the most relevant search results and the largest market share every search engine is always tweaking their algorithms.

You can spend over 80 hours a week studying these algorithms or you can just read the Google Blog. Google does a great job at keeping the general public informed about the changes at Google. I recommend that you visit their blog at least once a week to read the latest changes. If that doesn’t convince you also consider that Google has put together a great list of personal blogs that they are reading.

Give it a try!

Is Big Daddy Watching You!

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Big Daddy is Google’s new algorithm update that is rolling through their data-centers right now.

Many SEO’s get their panties in a twist every time Google does an update and you might get the impression that the world is coming to an end if you read many SEO’s blogs, but I tend to stay away from this crowd. Google changes are meant to help improve the search results for quality websites. If for some reason your website drops in rankings after a major update you have either practiced some shady SEO work or you need to wait for Google to finish tweaking their update.

Quality SEO work will 99% of the time keep you worry free from updates. You can read more about this update from Matt Cutts blog or you can practice safe SEO and be worry free.

Using RSS to Drive Traffic to Your Website

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Having Fresh and keyword rich content is one of our 3 steps to successful SEO. Most people do not have the time or motivation to continually update their website with new content. This is where RSS comes into play.

RSS is a way to syndicate your content all over the Internet. Chances are someone is already writing text on a subject matter that you want to target and publishing it via RSS feeds.

RSS aggregates are able to capture what others are writing and syndicate this content onto your website. Here is an example of the Spencer Hoyt RSS Feed page.

This is an easy one time setup that will update your website on a daily basis. Interested in setting up you own RSS feed? Contact Comit Technologies today and we will get you started on the path to higher rankings.
